Conditions Treated by Our Chelsea and Saline Optometrist Team

Dr. Erica Johnson Carder and Dr. Brian C. Hayes are proud to be a respected optometrist team in Chelsea and Saline, MI. We provide individualized care using the latest in innovative eye care services and can diagnose and treat a range of vision and eye conditions.

Astigmatism, Nearsightedness, and Farsightedness

A refractive vision error affects the way light enters the eye and focuses on the light-sensitive retina. Astigmatism is a common refractive error that occurs because of some sort of irregularity in the curve of your lens or cornea. Nearsightedness (myopia) occurs when your eyeball is too long or your cornea is too curved. This makes it difficult to see things far away. Farsightedness (hyperopia) occurs when the eyeball is too short or the cornea is too flat. This makes it difficult to see things close up.

Prescription eyeglasses or contacts, as well as pre- and post-operative LASIK care, are helpful options for these issues.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is vision loss caused by damage to the optic nerve, which connects the eyes to the brain. Several types of glaucoma exist. The most common type develops slowly over time. Glaucoma is often associated with increased inner eye pressure and other health conditions like hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Our glaucoma treatment may include low vision therapy, medications, and perioperative care.

Cataracts

Cataracts develop when the clear lens behind the colored part of your eye becomes cloudy. Cataracts affect people of all ages but are most common in older adults. If large enough, a cataract causes symptoms like blurry vision, tunnel vision, and halos around bright lights.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is progressive damage to the center of your retina, causing gradual vision loss. Treatment depends on the type but may include nutritional supplements, prescription eyewear, and medications.

Ambylopia (Lazy Eye)

Ambylopia is one of the most common childhood eye disorders and occurs when the brain doesn't process visual input from one eye as well as the other, even though the eye is anatomically normal. Vision therapy, patching, and corrective eyewear all can help.

Dry Eye

Itchy, red, watery, gritty, dry eye can be caused by a number of factors, from allergies to autoimmune conditions. Our optometry team works tirelessly to determine the cause of your dry eye symptoms and provide effective treatment to give you the relief you need.
